The RKR model allows to predict the project-specific collision risk and thus provides a reliable basis for the expert opinion for different breeding places. This allows to predict the individual risk of mortality of the breeding birds at the planned wind turbines (cf. Section 44 para. 1 no. 1 BNatSchG). In addition, if necessary, the results of the RKR model can be used as the basis for selecting and subsequently evaluating appropriate protection measures (in accordance to Section 45b Annex 1 Section 2). The RKR method is applied based on the ‘Fortsetzungsstudie Probabilistik’.
Within the LIFE EUROKITE project, the necessary scope of empirical telemetry data, operational data on wind turbine rotor speeds, and accompanying mortality surveys for the red kite was successfully collected and analyzed. Several publications on the red kite have already been submitted (mortality protocol, mortality analyses, collisions at wind turbines. Additional publications will follow shortly, addressing avoidance behaviour and breeding place relationships.
